4 Ways to Fight Mental Health Stigma

Stigma surrounding mental health struggles cause people to feel ashamed, embarrassed, and may even prevent them from seeking help. Those struggling with their mental health are already facing difficult challenges, they do not need this addition on top of it. Even though the stigma surrounding mental health has decreased over time, there still is stigma that exists. Speaking up and standing up against stigma is extremely important in the world. One way to help reduce the stigma is to educate yourself and others. It’s very difficult to stand up against stigma without having all of the knowledge on the subject. Try to educate yourself and others around you so that you are more aware of the mental health struggles many people face. Another tip is to be aware that physical and mental illness deserve equality. At the end of the day, physical struggles and mental struggles are both struggles. Another way to fight mental health stigma is by speaking up when the media is being stigmatizing. Media has a huge role on our everyday lives, and if there is stigmatizing media portrayed, those struggling with their mental health will continue to feel ashamed, embarrassed, etc. Lastly, show compassion and empathy for those struggling with their mental health. Be a support system for others, and try to understand what it is like being in their shoes.
