5 Ways To Improve Your Self Esteem

Self esteem can shift day to day — sometimes we may have high self worth, but other days we may have negative thoughts about ourselves. This shift can be caused by many different things, and may also affect many different things such as our relationships, work, or goals. These 5 strategies can help us to improve our self esteem when we are feeling down on ourselves. (1) Recognize the positives. Even your smallest accomplishments are worth celebrating. Accept compliments from others, instead of doubting them. Try to look forward to what you will do and accomplish in the future. (2) Acknowledge the support system you have. It can help to write a list of all of the people you love, trust, and feel supported by. Think about the healthy and close relationships you have with others, and understand how you got to that point. It can help to see that you formed that close relationship with a friend because YOU are a good friend. (3) Check out talk therapy. Therapy can help build up your self esteem and develop coping strategies. Talking to someone and getting the extra help to learn new ways to cope is a step forward in improving self esteem.  (4) Look after yourself, your mind, and your overall well-being. Getting enough sleep, having a healthy diet, spending time outside, and practicing mindfulness and meditation are all ways to look after yourself. (5) Be kind to yourself. Daily affirmations such as “I am enough” and “I am worth it” will feel strange at first, but it will help you to feel more confident. Try to also challenge negative thoughts about yourself. Try to avoid comparing yourself to others. Social media can play a role in comparing yourself to others, it may help to take a break from it! Lastly, treat yourself! Take some time to do things that make you feel happy.
