Good relationships, including one with yourself, is a very important aspect of our mental wellbeing. It is shown that people in healthy, positive and supportive relationships are more likely to be happier and healthier than those who are not. Having good social connections can help your mental health in a multitude of ways, including: lower rates of depression and anxiety, greater empathy, and higher self-esteem. With that being said, it is important that these are healthy relationships. If you are in a relationship that might not be supporting you in ways that are vital to your mental health, you may consider ending that relationship in order to prioritize your mental health. It is important that these are healthy and happy relationships that prioritize growth, not ones that hinder your well-being.
Here are some ways to build a healthy relationship with yourself:
Treat yourself with kindness
Challenge your negative thoughts with positive ones
Have a more balanced view about yourself and your life, don’t pressure yourself too much
Have a self-care day
Prioritize your mental health
Here are some ways you can try to maintain your healthy relationships with others:
Respect and support those around you
Have open and honest conversations
Be an “active listener”
Check-in with your friends regularly
Make time for those you love
