October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 2023 marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month. October became the month to raise awareness for domestic violence in 1981, when the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence created a “Day of Unity”. The intent of this day was to connect domestic violence advocates across the nation, who were all working to end violence against women and children. Today, Domestic Violence Awareness Month does the same thing. In fact, every Thursday in October is called “Go Purple Day”. On Thursdays, people are encouraged to wear the color purple as a symbol of courage, peace, survival, honor and recognition of those who have suffered from domestic violence.

Each year, Domestic Violence Awareness Month has its own unique and individual theme. This year, in 2023, the theme for Domestic Violence Awareness Month is #Every1KnowsSome1. This theme serves as a reminder of how common domestic violence really is. It reminds us that domestic violence is more than physical violence, and that we need to come together to raise awareness on the national issue.
