Mental Illness Awareness Week: October 1st-7th

The first full week of October, October 1st-7th, marks Mental Illness Awareness Week! During this week, we recognize the efforts of the National Alliance on Mental Illness to educate, increase awareness, and decrease the stigma that surrounds mental illness. Congress officially established every first full week of October as Mental Illness Awareness week, 33 years ago in 1990. Since then, advocates of mental illness have come together to sponsor activities every year that educate the public about mental illness.

Often during this week, supporters of mental health wear a green ribbon to show those around them, whether it be strangers or loved ones, that they care about each person’s mental health. This ribbon can also be worn to commemorate a loved one who has lost their battle of mental illness.

Mental illness looks different in everyone, but the support we show is the same. Educate those around you, increase awareness about mental illness, and help to end the stigma that follows.

If you or someone you know suffers from mental illness, call or text 988 for instant support. To further learn how to get support for mental health issues, visit FindSupport.gov.
